For almost everyone buying their first RC car today, electric - specifically brushless electric - is the right answer: quieter, cleaner, faster in most classes, and legal to run in far more places than nitro. Nitro still has a real place in the hobby, but it's a different kind of hobby to electric, not simply a faster or more "real" version of it. Both are legitimate ways to spend a Saturday - this is about which one fits your situation, not which one is objectively superior. How electric RC works
Electric RC cars run on a battery-powered motor, and almost everything sold as a beginner RTR today uses one of two motor types. Brushed motors are simple, inexpensive to maintain, and totally fine for a first car. Brushless motors cost a bit more complexity but deliver more power, run cooler, and need far less maintenance over time because there are no brushes to wear out. Most of what we'd recommend as a first car today runs brushless.
The battery side is what most new owners spend time thinking about day to day, more than the motor type itself. LiPo packs have become the standard for anything with real performance, replacing the older NiMH packs that still show up on some entry-level and budget models. Neither is wrong, but LiPo needs a bit more care around charging and storage - worth reading up on before your first pack arrives, not after. A basic balance charger matched to your battery type is worth budgeting for alongside the car itself, since a mismatched charger is one of the more common early mistakes new owners make.
How nitro works
Nitro RC cars run on a miniature two-stroke engine burning a methanol-based fuel blend, started with a glow plug rather than a key or a button. That means a genuinely different pre-drive routine: fuel, glow igniter, engine tuning (the needle valve conversation nitro owners have with each other constantly), and a warm-up period before the car's ready to run. It's mechanically closer to a small-scale version of a real engine than anything electric offers, which is exactly why some hobbyists prefer it.
None of this is difficult once you've done it a few times, but it's a different set of skills to learn compared with charging a battery and pressing a trigger, and it needs to be learned properly before your first run rather than figured out on the fly. There's also a social side to this that's easy to underestimate: nitro meets at NZ clubs tend to have their own rhythm and community, built around shared engine-tuning knowledge as much as racing itself.
Speed: which is actually faster?
Top-tier nitro engines can still out-accelerate many stock electric setups, but the modern answer is that brushless electric has closed most of that gap for typical RTR classes, and a 3S or 4S brushless setup will comfortably out-run a stock nitro engine of similar size. Nitro's real speed advantage today shows up mostly in specific fuel-class racing rather than in a straight comparison of what ships in a box.
Acceleration feel is also different in a way that pure top-speed numbers don't capture. Brushless electric delivers near-instant torque from a standstill, while nitro engines need to build revs before they hit their power band - a different sensation behind the trigger even when the numbers end up similar.
Running costs & maintenance compared
Neither hobby is free to run, but the ongoing effort looks different. Electric maintenance is mostly battery care: charging correctly, storage charging between sessions, and replacing a pack every so often as it ages - covered in full in our LiPo charging and safety guide . Nitro asks for more regular hands-on attention: fuel and glow plugs to keep stocked, an air filter to clean, a needle valve to tune as temperature and altitude shift, and an engine that benefits from being run and serviced rather than left idle for months. If routine mechanical fettling sounds appealing rather than tedious, that's a real point in nitro's favour, not a downside.
There's also a readiness difference worth knowing before you commit. An electric RTR is ready again as soon as a charged battery goes back in - a few minutes at most with a decent charger. A nitro car needs fuel on hand, a glow igniter charged, and a warm-up before every session, which adds friction to a quick after-work run that electric simply doesn't have. For most people driving casually a few times a month, that difference in readiness matters more day-to-day than either hobby's running costs.
Where you can run each
Electric RTRs are close to universally welcome: driveways, parks, most club tracks, indoors in some cases. Nitro is noisier and produces exhaust, which rules out most residential settings and many public parks outright - nitro belongs at a dedicated club track or a large, isolated property, not the back lawn. If where you can drive matters as much as what you're driving, that alone pushes most first-time buyers toward electric.
This is worth thinking through before you buy rather than after: a nitro car that can only be driven at a distant club track on weekends gets far less use than an electric car you can run in the driveway most evenings, regardless of which one is more exciting on paper.
Who should still choose nitro?
Nitro still makes sense for a specific kind of hobbyist: someone who wants the sound and smell of a running engine as part of the experience, enjoys tuning and mechanical fettling as much as driving, or is already committed to a club with an established fuel class. Is nitro faster than electric?
In outright terms, no - not any more. Modern brushless electric setups match or beat stock nitro speed for most RTR classes, and the speed advantage nitro once had has narrowed significantly as brushless technology has improved. Nitro can still win in specific tuned fuel-class racing, but that's a specialist pursuit, not a reflection of what either hobby offers out of the box. The gap has narrowed enough that "nitro is faster" is largely a leftover assumption from years ago rather than a reliable rule today - plenty of experienced racers who came up on nitro will say the same thing themselves once pressed on current stock classes.
Can you run nitro in a residential area?
Generally, no - nitro engines are loud and produce exhaust, which makes most residential streets, parks and quiet neighbourhoods unsuitable and, in many cases, likely to draw noise complaints. A dedicated club track or a large, isolated rural property is the realistic answer for nitro; electric doesn't carry the same restriction. Check with your local council or club before assuming a public park is fine - noise bylaws vary, and nitro is the power source most likely to trigger a complaint.
Do electric cars need maintenance too?
Yes, just a different kind. Electric maintenance centres on the battery - correct charging, storage charging between uses, and eventual replacement - plus the same drivetrain upkeep any RC car needs regardless of power source (tyres, bearings, gears). It's generally lighter-touch than nitro's fuel-and-engine routine, but it isn't zero maintenance. Skipping battery care isn't really an option either way - a neglected LiPo pack degrades and can become unsafe, so "lower maintenance" doesn't mean "no maintenance". A second, already-charged battery is the easiest way to keep a driving session going without waiting on a charger either way.
